Erectile Dysfunction Drugs - How Do They Work?

Ads associated with Viagra ads in the past were associated with many myths. For instance, it was at one time believed that erectile dysfunction (ED) was a problem that at one time only occurred in older men.

However, it is now common knowledge that ED is a problem that can affect men of all ages, even men barely old enough to be sexually active (particularly 18 to 21 year olds). Erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra work well but they are only helpful for repairing the physical aspect of sexual impotence.

To further explain, this ED drug does not help a man get aroused. It also does not aid in addressing emotional and psychological factors that cause a man to have a low libido (lower sex drive).

The same is true of the other two popular ED drugs-Cialis and Levitra. These two medications work in a way very similar to Viagra as they all release the cGMP in the body that inhibits release of hormones. The result is that a man is then easier able to obtain an erection.

The class of drugs that Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra belong to is PDE-5 inhibitor drugs. These drugs are only legally made available by way of a doctor’s prescription and should not be obtained any other way. Be very careful too of imitation ED drugs being sold, as it happens all the time.

A brief description of each one of these drugs is provided below:

  • Viagra-This is a drug that was first made popular in 1988. It is approved by the FDA and is available in the brand name as well as the generic name (sildenafil citrate). This formula is available in 25, 50, and 100 mg pills and they are only available by prescription. It usually can be take about an hour before sexual activity for maximum chance of benefits, and it lasts 4 hours.
  • Levitra-This is a drug that was sold by Bayer as of the year 2005. It is available in 2.5, 5, 10, and 20mg doses. It works very similarly as Viagra in that it only needs to be taken 1 to 2 hours before sexual activity and it typically lasts up to 4 hours. The generic name and active ingredient of Levitra is vardenafil.
  • Cialis-This drug is a little bit different than Viagra or Levitra. Cialis lasts between 24 to 36 hours after taking it, which provides couples with more opportunity to become aroused. This is especially convenient when trying to make a romantic weekend more spontaneous. Cialis typically comes in 5, 10, and 20 mg doses and can be taken a minimum of one hour before sexual activity occurs.

More Facts

All erectile dysfunction drugs have some side effects, and the most common complications a person experiences are very minor. For instance, a man could get a headache or experience some sinus problems (i.e. stuff or runny nose).

Pack pains, muscle aching and blurred vision are also common. Chance of blindness or sudden hearing loss is very slim. (Blindness or hearing loss is rare.) Persons with heart problems usually cannot use PDE5-inhibiting medications.
