Healthy Sperm
If you plan to have children at any point in life it is very important to keep your sperm healthy. While over fifty million sperm are ejaculated at one time in a healthy male with no issues, it only takes one or two of the little swimmers to reach an egg and fertilize it. If your sperm is not healthy then the chances that a woman will conceive are very slim.
However, it is worth remembering that it can take some time before a woman becomes pregnant. Still, if your sperm is healthy and you are in good general health the odds are that it will happen sooner rather than later. However, if your sperm are not healthy the odds are against you. In studies and research all over the world, it has been proven that sperm counts in men are steadily declining. So far a one percent decline has been reported. The reasons for these declines are not unusual, and are in fact quite treatable in most cases. If you have experienced fertility issues in the past there are some things you can do to keep your sperm as healthy as possible.
Common Causes of Infertility in Men:
- Wearing tight underwear or pants can make the scrotum too hot to produce good, healthy sperm. The scrotal area should be kept cool at around four degrees cooler than your average body temperature. Additionally, resting lap tops on your lap is not advised, as they get very hot.
- Again, you should keep the scrotal area cool for optimum results. Those in New York have a higher sperm count than those in Los Angeles, and those in Finland had higher sperm counts than those in Britain. This clearly shows that a colder climate helps sperm counts.
- Medications and recreational drugs can affect fertility. This particularly applies to steroids, opiates, and cytotoxic drugs used in cancer treatments. If you are having trouble getting your woman pregnant you should talk to your doctor about the medications you are taking to see if they are the cause of the problem.
- Alcohol abuse is proven to affect sperm count as well. You should limit how much alcohol you drink if you want to become more fertile.
- There are many other things such as toxins in our environment that can affect sperm count. There is a lot of debate as to what actually causes this problem, although it is well known that radiation is a key factor in infertility. Other toxins that may affect sperm counts include pesticides, mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls, estrogen in the water supply, or aftershaves. However, these substances are all under scrutiny and have not been confirmed as reasons for infertility.
One way you can make sure that your sperm count is high is to take a folic acid supplement. This is not only natural, but is also proven to have a drastic effect on sperm counts. It can provide as much as a seventy four percent increase.
